The Ukrainian Energy Brigades started their work in 1999.

The nuclear catastrophe in Chernobyl in 1986 left large scars in the minds of the people of Ukraina. This country is for its energy supply still largely depending on nuclear power and coal. Besides that for many wood has son importance for many people in the countryside.

The Ukrainian Energy Brigades want to show with their programme, that energy efficiency is a much more logical answer to the country's problems in energy policy and in the country's economic and social situation, than continuing dependence on nuclear power.

In 2000 UEB did two pilot projects and weatherized an orphanage in Rivne, one of the two towns near which new nuclear power plants are planned as an alternative to Chernobyl. By working with partners from different social sectors, the Ukrainian Energy Brigades want to show the economic viability of simple energy efficiency techniques.
